SÖREN ERNST, VITA
Born in Hamburg, Germany in 1967. After an
initial apprenticeship as stonemason he soon
discovered his passion for sculpture and served a
two year period near Kiel in the studio of sculptor,
Jörg Plickat. There he became acquainted with
other materials like wood, clay, plaster and metal,
while stone remained his preferred choice.
A two year stay in Scotland saw first exhibitions
and the development of his own creative style
which was inspired by the archaic, pre-celtic and
other monolithic styles and cultures.
With his move to Portugal in 1990 he discovered
the lighter side of his craft with the easy
availability of limestone and marble. That made it
possible to work more delicately and added color
to the stone.
The culmination of this development so far, is the
joint application of traditional stone craft with a
blend of tile work and mosaic, enhancing and
embellishing the innate quality of one another.
From 2004 living and working together with
sculptress Steff Bauer until 2015, in which period
the Algarve served as a winter domicile and
Germany as the main tributary to the couples joint
ventures and individual work.
2016 Søren moved to his former hometown Kiel by
the Baltic, where has a studio and outside work
space.
